Straight above, blue sky is normal sunlight reflecting off the atmosphere, while near the horizon the clear sky can appear more orange or red. ![]() This is easily visible right before sunrise or right after sunset when looking opposite to the direction of the Sun in the sky. Called the Belt of Venus, this transitional band between the dark eclipsed sky and the bright day sky can be seen most prominently in the direction opposite the Sun. This is the dividing region between the Earth's shadow on the atmosphere and the portion of the atmosphere directly illuminated by sunlight. In today's image, we see the Belt of Venus. ![]()
